Update: Small earthquakes west of Port Orford

Update posted at 8 p.m. Sept. 9 The USGS reports a swarm of small below-sea earthquakes off the Oregon coast occurred over the past two days. The largest, a 5.8 magnitude tremor occurred at 9:08 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8. Three smaller quakes were registered Tuesday morning and more occurred Tuesday afternoon. A 4.9 magnitude quake 141 miles west of Coos Bay was registered at 12:02 p.m. Sept. 9. Followed by a magnitude 5.1 tremor 140 miles west of Coos Bay and a 4.4 tremor 129 miles west of Coos Bay, both occurring at 12:31 p.m. Previous coverage posted at 7 a.m. Sept.9 The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred at 9:08 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, approximately 100 miles west of Port Orford along the Oregon coast. Three other smaller quakes followed the 5.8 magnitude quake, a 4.9 magnitude at 10:59 p.m. Monday. A 3.1 tremor was registered at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a 4.3 magnitude tremor that occurred at 4:47 a.m. Tuesday. No tsunami is expected from these below-sea quakes. The Oregon Emergency Management Department (OEM) has stated in previous publish interviews, that the area where the undersea tremors have occurred is a region where earthquakes are common.
